The Sunny Side up, however new to the scene, have played with bands such as Ellington, Bleached Academy, For Our Hero and Tonight Alive.Their Fan Base growing and their Unbelieveable Support which shows there is only one way and thats up!
I got the Pleasure to talk to Tom Kennedy from the band about their band antics.
Band members Max Wilkinson- Lead Singer Tom Kennedy-Guitarist Kyle Jarvis-Bass Guitarist Daniel Madden- Drums Milo Wilkinson-Guitarist How was playing with Mariana's Trench recently?
It was amazing, we didn't expect the show to be so huge or for us to be so well received but it was crazy! Definitely my favourite show we have played so far.
I love the music video for 'Hope',Describe the process and how it differed from the music video 'Day By Day'?
First of all thank you! With Day By Day we did a story line to fit the song as well as a peformance piece. For hope we wanted to keep it to just a performance - it was I guess the first glimpse into our new sound and we wanted to show that more than anything so we were just looking to do a video that matched the vibe of the song.
Who are some musical influences for you?
I honestly don't think you could find a more musically different band if you tried, we all have such different music taste - pretty much all of us came from the hardcore scene so that's always rooted in what we do as well as melodic rock. What music is your favourite right now? Right now I'm listening to the new Heroes For Hire record, Thrice, Cruel Hand, Kanye West and heaps more.
What do you enjoy doing the most when you are not performing or working on your music?
I manage a band called "Elegist" so I put lots of time into that, other than that just hanging out with my friends and going to shows.
For someone who hasn't seen you live what are some things to expect?
We try and keep things entertaining! we have a lot of fun playing live and I think that comes through.
What are the names of everyone in the band and what are some nicknames you have?
Dan - Dahn, Danchez
Max - Milky, Wilko, dog rat.
Tom - TK, Cat President, Cat P, Cat Prez
Milo - Milobah, Animal, swol lord
Kyle - gravis, gweevis, guarvis, krill, mcdick.
At what age did you develop your love for music?
For me it came super young from my older sister and older cousin - my sister was heaps into punk and my cousin played in a punk band so from when I was like 9, 10 years old that was what I grew up on.
If you had to choose a quote (or a line) to describe what motivates you day to day, what would it be?
Good question: I would say I try and live by the principle of "persevere and overcome" don't let anything get in your way or anyone else bring you down keep working hard and stay true to yourself and you'll get through. Oh and of course yolo. (You Only Live Once).
Where's your favorite place to go for inspiration? and what inspires you the most?
For me I get inspired by other bands and music so I would say some of the most inspiring moments I've had have been at shows, for example seeing a band like Anberlin who are a huge influence on me doing what they do after 10 years and still being as energetic and positive as ever is amazing. As for inspiring places nothing beats Byron Bay in the early hours.
How did the band name come about?
Well we used to be called Max Wilkinson and The Sunny Side Up back when it was more is being his backing band so when we made the move to make this a band officially we just dropped the max wilkinson and went with it.
One word to describe this experience so far?
Wow, that's a tough one - I don't know if I can pick one word we are only just getting started there's a lot more to come from us!
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?
For our band I would love to collaborate with Jesse Lacey from Brand New - he's one of my favourite song writers, such a genius!
What genre of music do you consider your work to be?
Genres cause so much grief and drama I will just say it's rock and let you make your own decisions from there.
Do you have a message for your fans?
Thank you so much for everything so far and stick with us we have a lot more to offer!
what advice do you have for anyone getting into the music field?
Be honest, work hard, have fun with your friends.
